OTONABEE FAMILY COUNSELLING CENTRE

OUR SERVICES

Our services are primarily geared towards children, youth, couples and families.

Have a look at a brief description of our what we offer. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY

CBT is a kind of talk therapy focussed on helping young people shift their thinking in order to change their emotions and/or behaviours. It is a very present-oriented treatment model and focusses mostly on trying to solve immediate problems. CBT is often a short-term intervention and there is a large body of research supporting its effectiveness for a variety of issues.

TRAUMA AND GRIEF COUNSELLING

Evidence-based counselling for childhood trauma or grief includes developing emotional expression, coping skills and balanced thinking about distressing life events. Young people are guided through a process of understanding and coming to terms with what has happened.

SCHOOL ISSUES

Struggles at school may result from a combination of factors, such as social skills deficits, inability to follow directions, ineffective problem-solving and/or poor conflict resolution skills. We help young people develop these skills through awareness, practice and implementation. We make use of games, videos, role-plays and social stories to build their capacity and effectiveness in the school environment.

SOCIAL SKILLS

Effective interpersonal techniques help young people increase their social comfort, effectively manage conflict, express their feelings and seek support in a healthy manner. Social skills training is a key step in reducing aggression, responding to bullying and establishing and maintaining positive peer relationships.

SELF REGULATION

Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage emotions, behaviours and reactions. Self-regulation helps children and teenagers learn, follow rules, get along with others and become more independent. Using evidence-based programming, we can assist young people in understanding, identifying and putting into practice the skills necessary to regulate their own emotions in a healthy and effective manner.

PARENTING SUPPORT

Parent management strategies provide caregivers with practical, straightforward approaches to behaviour problems. We utilize parenting approaches that have strong evidence supporting their effectiveness in improving behaviour and rebuilding positive family relationships.

MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness encourages us to be more aware of our present experience, while at the same time being non-judgmental and accepting of this experience. Research has shown a wide variety of benefits from regular practice of this kind of meditation, including mood management, improvements in attention and memory, reduction in stress and even better immune functioning.

HEALTHY SEXUALITY

We offer highly specialized services to help adolescents navigate their sexual development in a healthy, safe and respectful manner. Treatment of childhood sexual behaviour problems and adolescent sexually harmful behaviour is provided by an expert in the field.

COUPLES COUNSELLING

Couples counselling at OFCC is based on an Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) framework, but goals for therapy are mutually set by the couple and their treatment provider. We offer a neutral and non-judgmental environment for couples to explore challenging interpersonal dynamics and a safe space for LGBTQI and queer family systems.

PRICING

We charge between $120-$175 per session

Cost is dependent on the clinician you see, as well as the modality (family and couples cost slightly more).

Fees can be paid by e-transfer, credit card or cash.

Some families have additional medical coverage that can help offset the costs of therapy. Have a look to see if Registered Social Work services are covered under your plan.
